Welcome to one of the most in-depth and personal topics in ALL of music…the world of composition! No matter what players you enjoy, what music you’re influenced by, who your teacher was taught by…everyone has their own interpretation of composition. This is one of the most beautiful aspects of music…there is no wrong way to do it!Â
While there is no wrong way to compose, there are a TON of strategies and terminology that will help you in your composing journey. One of the best ways to understand composition is to listen and dissect a song that you like - we’re taking it one step further by showing you how the ARTIST breaks down their composition.Â
In this pathway, you’ll be exposed to 7 different teachers who approach music in their own unique way. While this breakout course is meant to TEACH you a lot of things, one of the most important take-aways we can offer is the INSPIRATION.Â
If at any time a teacher says something that inspires you to pick up your instrument - DO IT! Pause the course and explore these ideas for yourself.Â
As a part of the academy, you have access to each masterclass we offer…and you’ll notice that almost EVERY course talks about composition in one way or another. It’s a testament to how important this topic is in your musical journey. Similar to grooves, we’re combining a lot of elements here, but composition is a step further in that we are intentional about what we play, how long we play for, and when we choose to play certain elements ... have we mentioned there are no WRONG answers?!
As we said before, you’ll find a TON of composing videos on MasterTheHandpan, but for this breakout, we’ve featured videos from Archer and Tripp, Manu Delago, Alexander Mercks, MEA, Mumi and Malte Marten.Â
Take your time with these videos and really try to imagine how you can implement what you learn into your own playing. Have fun and enjoy!
