RAV Vast G Pygmy

G Pygmy RAV Vast will enchant you with its deep and mystical sound. Severe primaeval nature inspired us to create this scale. It conjures up the pictures of stalactite caves, lava fields, cold springs, deep creeks and old-growth forests in your mind. The sound of the G Pygmy scale will take you to the places where the spirits of nature live.
This scale is a great choice to become your first RAV drum, especially if you are looking for a darker sound to create a mysterious mood. Advanced players will enjoy the opportunity to choose between the major and minor feel and create highly contrasting compositions.
The G Pygmy is a mysterious scale. The melodies composed with the G Pygmy are full of heavy rainy clouds and the smell of ozone before a storm. This RAV drum is made of 1.5 mm special steel that provides a deep acoustic sound with a great number of harmonious overtones to this musical instrument.
The Pygmy scale has a very nice-sounding chord progression that is highly popular among handpan music players. Just like the B Celtic, the G Pygmy is a pentatonic instrument. Nevertheless, the G Pygmy RAV drum has a different and very unique flavour. Itâs initially tuned in G minor. However, you can also get some other scales - Bb Major, G Phrygian, Bb Mixolydian â if you switch the keynote and change the note progression slightly. In addition, this scale has a variety of chords available to it.
The bassy Ding is tuned in G2, and the rest of the tongues are tuned in the 3rd and 4th octaves. The G Pygmy has only one halftone (D3-D#3) and is a very harmonious scale. The fields above the steel tongues are well-tuned, and at the same time, thereâs not too much noise of your fingers playing. The sound is still warm and thick.
For a rav drum G Pygmy is very versatile. It is sometimes called a âday-and-nightâ scale. It has both major and minor tones and can create two distant moods. The higher notes provide a sunny diurnal feel, while the lower notes bring in the nocturnal dramatic and meditative sound. You can switch between these two moods and create stunningly sophisticated and contrasting compositions. The G Pygmy tongue drum is great for both slow and fast playing. Thatâs what makes it multifaceted.
Having been used to the handpanâs sound for so many years, my ears fell in love with the RAV Vastâs whole new sound: deep, rich, warm and resonant. The range of harmonics on each tongue - somewhere between 4-7 tuned partials - make it particularly exciting to explore and play. There is great responsiveness and rebound to the touch.
It is easy to get a clear sound from each tongue with minimal energy, making it perfect for beginners and youngsters as well as pros. (It can also be played with special mallets so itâs good for those with manual dexterity issues.)
The RAV is named Vast because of sustain, which itâs famous for. With each tongue emitting up to 7 clean and balanced overtones along with the main note, the RAV is basically its own choir.
With its magnificent sustain and gong-like, bassy sounds, it's a great addition to my percussion arsenal. Aside from the fast trills and rolls, overall it pushes me to play slower, more reflectively and meditatively. Playing on my lap, my whole body vibrates. It feels both interactive and calming. I use them regularly in my compositions as a root to ground my chords.
About this maker
The RAV was invented by a Russian engineer, Andrey Remyannikov in 2013, inspired by handpans. It has turned out to be unique among other related instruments. RAV has a hypnotic, tranquil, meditative, mystical sound which along with its shape, has earned it the name spacedrum or UFO drum.
Neither beginners nor professionals get bored with the RAV. A large variety of scales leaves no one untouched and everyone will find a tuning to suit their taste. Specially selected notes in each scale make the process of improvisation and songwriting easier. No more stressful memorizing of notes, chords and music theory. You can start playing right away and as you grow, your RAV will reveal its full potential.
Listen to this scale
As the most popular RAV Vast scales, the G Pygmy has a lot to offer for both beginners and advanced players.
If you choose the G Pygmy for your first tongue drum, you can't go wrong. Itâs a wonderful scale to start your RAV journey and easy to adapt to.
You can experiment with melodies by moving a single note and then try to fill them in with some percussive elements, slowly moving forwards by adding chord progressions â dyads and triads. And at the same time, the G Pygmy is perfect for advanced creations and making more complicated compositions as you grow in your abilities.
